We’ll also give you the tips, tricks, and ideas you need to help you find the perfect area rug for your bedroom, no matter your design style.
One of the most important parts of choosing the right rug for your bedroom is deciding on where you want the area rug to sit in the space. Do you want to get out of bed in the morning and feel the rug beneath your feet, or do you just want it for its visual appeal? Knowing the answer to this question will help you find the right rug size. When it comes to area rug sizes for bedrooms, there are a few popular ways you can style your rug.
The first way that you can style a rug in your bedroom is underneath all of the furniture. You can place the rug beneath the bed as well as the nightstands, which will make your space feel cozy and comfortable. If you have a queen or a king-sized bed, an 8x10 rug generally works well for this placement. If you have a larger bed, a 9x12 rug could be an option as well.
Another way you can place an area rug in your bedroom is by putting the rug just beneath the bed. Leaving the nightstands off of the rug is a great option if you don’t have a symmetrical space with two nightstands, you have oversized nightstands, or you want the rug design to be seen more. Depending on the look you are going for, there are two sizes that can work for this style. An 8x10 rug will usually work well with a queen-sized bed and just the bed under the rug. There will be some additional rug at the foot of the bed if you choose an 8x10. Another size that works well is a 6x9. Turned sideways, this rug will hug the bed and leave a bit less overhang on each side and small amount of overhang at the bottom of the bed.
Area Rug Size Tips for Bedrooms
The best way to know what your rug will look like in your space is to measure. You can measure the bed and the nightstands in their place to get a better idea of where the rug will land. Keep in mind, it’s important to know the exact dimensions of the rug you are looking at. Not every rug will be an exact 8 feet by 10 feet, so you’ll want to check to be sure first.
One tip that can help you find the best rug size for your bedroom is to use painter’s tape. Once you have found the rug you like and you know the exact dimensions, you can put painter’s tape on the floor to outline where it would go. With this technique, you won’t have to worry about whether the size will work or not after purchasing your rug, you’ll know what to expect beforehand.
In this neutral bedroom, an area rug brings together all of the shades of brown and makes the room feel like home. Because the rug is placed under the legs of the bed but not the nightstands, it doesn’t take away from the curved architecture of the room. This is one instance where keeping the nightstands off the rug proves to be an excellent design choice.

If you want something unique, consider adding an area rug to your bedroom at an adjacent angle. Still adding texture, style, and comfort, this area rug placed at an angle plays on the lines in the bedroom while providing a soft and subtle touch of warmth. If you choose to go this route, you’ll likely need a smaller rug rather than a larger one, so keep this in mind when you’re on the search for the perfect rug.
