At O’Brien’s Carpet One Floor & Home, family is everything. So, it’s no surprise that after learning that an injured local veteran needed a helping hand, help, as it turned out, was right around the corner.
In recent months, store staff toiled diligently at a local family’s Peyton, CO, home, which required major modifications to accommodate the needs of one who has likewise given selflessly to others. O’Brien’s Carpet One provided flooring throughout the modified home, joining forces with the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Being severely injured in the line of duty in late 2005 was only the latest in a lifelong series of challenges endured by Senior Master Sergeant Israel “DT” Del Toro Jr. The devoted family man, who lost both parents when barely a teenager, has spent his life providing for others and keeping his family together. It’s a promise he’s fought hard to honor: first with his three younger siblings, then with his own son and later, his Air Force comrades in arms.
SMSgt Del Toro, who survived burns on over 80 percent of his body and lost most of his fingers in the explosion, never gave up. After an extended recovery, he re-enlisted in the service, being the first fully disabled airman to do so. He even went on to earn a gold medal in shot put at the 2016 Invictus Games!
On October 26, the Del Toro family were given the keys to a customized, mortgage-free smart home custom tailored to meet daily needs. From automatic doors and widened hallways, to touchscreens controlling lights, climate, and security, it’s true: there’s no place like home!
